『TIME』速読会のまとめ

　ＴＩＭＥ読書会、参加、ありがとうございました。
　本日のＴＩＭＥ速読会より、メモです（２００７年１２月１７日号）。

【英語面】
１　あ、それしてくれると、私は助かる：That works in my favor.
２　ベトナム人のオートバイ大好き状況：Vietnam's love affair with the motorbike
３　（チャベスは国民投票で）負けたんで、国内問題に集中するようになるだろ う：The loss should prod him to focus on the problems of his nation.　　prod(突く）という動詞が、おもろ！
４　電撃的登場：electrifying emergence
５　しつこい（うざい）失業：nagging unemployment　　naggingは、まさに「うざい」という感じのニュアンスの英語だと思うが、「うざい」ほど口語的ではないか？その usage level（口語か文語か、どのレベルか）が、今ひとつ、わからない。
６　彼、元気なかった：He seemed dispirited.
７　あいつら、イランに戦争しかけたくて、うずうずしていた：They had noisily rattled sabers about Iran.（サーベルつまり軍刀をがちゃがちゃ鳴らしてたというのが、直訳）。
８　そのウラニウムから、爆弾をつくる：to fasion that uranium into a bomb (fasionを、こういう動詞につかうとは、さすがＴＩＭＥ誌！）
９　不思議にも：Oddly,
１０　本能的な反応、無意識の反応：a gut reaction（gutは、内蔵）
１１　より強まった攻撃：stepped-up attacks
１２　充実した時間、意義ある時間：quality time
１３　計画をたてる、筋書きを書く：to lay down a road map for 〜
１４　アブダビ投資局は、その会社の株の４．９％を所有するために７６億ドルを 投資するところだと発表した：The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority announced it was forking over 7.6 billion dollars to take a 4.9 percent stake in the company. 　
　 フォーク（fork ）ってoverと組み合わせされて、こういう使い方をするのかああ…　おもろ。つまり、フォークをつかって肉を誰かに差し出す感じの意味。fork overで熟語。
１５　潜在的なマイナス面：potential downsides
　はあ、downsidesをこうつかうのか。negative aspectsくらいしか、浮かばん。
１６　必死で生きぬいて成長する、繁茂する：thrive  （surviveしか思いつかない人は、語彙が小さい）
１７　腐れ縁：they are inextricably linked　　（ほどけないほど結びついているという意味で、inextricablyというのが、複数の糸がこじれてこじれてほどけないような状態）
１８　２００００人以上の日本人がそこで暮らしている：Upwards of 20,000 Japanese now live there   （〜以上というときに、upwards of  が使える。）
１９　最新の科学知識を吸収する：to vacuum up the latest scientific knowledge
  （あかん、absorbくらいしか、浮かばん。情けない。とほほ…）
２０　１９２３年、大地震が東京をぺしゃんこにした：
　　A killer earthquake leveled Tokyo in 1923.
★２１　本日のグランプリのフレーズ！
　　ＡよりＢが重要になる：television gave way to design  ４７頁
　　これぞ究極のＴＩＭＥ英語！　give とかgetの慣用句は英語の大和言葉。ここは、シャープが開発した液晶平面ＴＶによって、テレビにデザイン感覚が戻ってきた。あるいはデザインがものをい う時代になった。そういった意味。うまく日本語に訳せない。
　　　　　　
【内容面】
１　コロンビアの国民的アイドル歌手、シャキーラが、かの国民的作家（あるいは ラテン
・アメリカ大陸を代表する作家）ガブリエル・ガルシア・マルケスと知り合いだっ たとは、
しらんかった。へえ、へえ、へえ、へえ。不思議。
２　ＳＷＦＳが約１８０兆円くらいあるというのが、おもしろかった。

【作文の練習】
　山崎ゼミには３０名以上の学生が必死でがんばっているが、いってみれば腐れ縁 で、いまさら離れられない仲である。彼らは最新の経済学知識を吸収しようと、努力しているが、奇妙にも今日の山崎教授は元気がなかった。先週のゼミはおも しろく、みんな充実した時間を過ごしたが、今週は皆が疲れているようだ。みんなアフリカが大好きなので、教授はそれならということでアフリカに焦点を当て た講義をしている。しかしゼミのマイナス面の１つは、授業中にみなよく寝ることだ。しかしそれで先生は助かっている。（意味的には奇妙な内容だが）。
　
日本人的英語：
　　More than 30 students are working hard in Yamazaki's class. They are very friendly to each other. All are making utmost efforts to absorb the latest economics knowledge, but strangely,  Prof. Yamazaki looked tired today.  The meeting last week was very interesting and everybody had a good time.  They all seem a bit tired this week.  As all of them love Africa very much, Prof. Yamazaki has decided to focus on African issues in his lecture.　But one negative aspect of the class is that they all sleep well during the class.　And this is a great help to Yamazaki.

ＴＩＭＥの英語（大人の英語）
Upwards of 30 students are thriving in Yamazaki's class. They are all inextricably connected; they work hard to vacuum up the latest economics knowledge, but oddly, Prof. Yamazaki seemed dispirited today.  The session last week was so inspiring that everybody had quality time.　They all look a little tired this week.  Their love affair with Africa prod Prof. Yamazaki to focus on  African issues in his lecture. The downside is they all sleep well in the classroom, which works in Yamazaki's favor.
